Light-based work / 9 × 16 bulb matrix / TouchDesigner

Grid is a low-resolution light display made from a 9 × 16 matrix of frosted bulbs. Functioning like a very low-resolution television, the piece uses programmed light to create image, movement, rhythm, and atmosphere from a minimal set of points.

The work was controlled with TouchDesigner, allowing video-like behavior to emerge from a simple physical grid. The grid gives the viewer something stable to read, while the light shifts the experience of that structure over time.

Letting people interact with and control light-based artworks is central to James Galvin’s practice.
